Calling All Design Students to the Detroit
Institute of Arts
Announcing Ruff and Ready to Wear, a modern-day fashion
design contest with a 17th-century, high-fashion twist
February 14, 2005
WHAT
In conjunction with the exhibition Gerard ter Borch (Feb. 27--May
22), the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is excited to announce
Ruff and Ready to Wear, a modern-day fashion design
contest with a 17th-century, high-fashion twist. Gerard ter
Borch (1617–81) is considered one of the most beloved
painters of the 17th–century Dutch “Golden Age,”
well known for his lavish and detailed garment depictions in
his genre and portrait paintings. Drawing inspiration from the
fabulous attire in Gerard ter Borch’s paintings, design
students will be given the opportunity to create fashions that
include their modern interpretation of a ruff, or a common day
ruffle.
Finalists will be judged in a fashion show juried by local fashion
celebrities such as Susan Howes, fashion editor for HOUR Detroit
and Cat Chow, internationally acclaimed designer. Prizes will
be awarded to the top three designers, who will receive Haberman
Fabrics gift certificates and DIA memberships. The grand-prize
winner gets the chance to display and sell their garments in
the Pure Detroit Design Lab, a clothing store in downtown Detroit.
WHEN
Designs must be submitted for review by March 25.
The fashion show takes place on April 22.
WHERE
The fashion show will be at the Detroit Institute of Arts in
Rivera court.
The museum is located at 5200 Woodward, Detroit.
HOW
Designers should submit their fashions to Tracy Sellers in the
DIA’s education department. She can be contacted by e-mail
at tsellers@dia.org, or
by mailing to 5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202.
More information is available online at www.dia.org.
